Who can request an electronic identity card (eID) or Kids-ID?
Only Belgians registered in the consular registers can obtain an eID or Kids-ID.
Not yet registered? Find more information here.
Where can I request an eID or Kids-ID?
Since the introduction of biometric eID’s/Kids-IDs in 2021, a personal visit to the embassy in Oslo, by appointment, is required. During this visit, your photograph, signature (from 6 years old), and fingerprints (from 12 years old) will be taken.
This does not apply to children under 6 years of age. For them, it is possible to request a Kids-ID remotely.
It is not possible to obtain an eID or Kids-ID through the honorary consulates.
Do I need to have my biometric data taken?
Yes, EU legislation requires all ID cards issued by EU member states to contain index fingerprints.
The biometric data must be taken again for each new document. It is not possible to reuse the data from your current eID or passport.
I can't travel to Oslo, what now?
- You can request an eID or Kids-ID in Belgium:
- In the municipality where you were last registered (last domicile) OR
- In the municipality where you were born (only if you have never lived in Belgium) OR
- In a municipality of your choice (if you have never lived in Belgium nor were born in Belgium)
This can only be done through the emergency procedure, which is more expensive (around 100 euros). Contact the municipality for practical details.
- You can have your biometric data taken at another consulate of your choice (not honorary consulates!). These data will be kept for 3 months. Within this period, you can order an eID/Kids-ID from the embassy in Oslo.
Before having your biometrics taken at another consulate, notify us by e-mail, along with the complete application and proof of payment.
